Calvin H. Chapman June 8, 1923 - September 26, 2011
Salem, NY- Calvin H. "Cal" Chapman, 88, of Salem, passed away Monday morning, September 26, 2011 at Saratoga Hospital. Born June 8, 1923 in Northfield, VT, Cal was the son of the late Harry and Alice (Boardman) Chapman. Cal was a 1941 graduate of Northfield High School and had attended Bentley School of Accounting in Boston, MA.
Cal worked for Agway Energy in Greenwich for many years retiring in 1988.
Cal was a WW II veteran serving in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Francis J. Clark, CMH American Legion Post #812 of Salem, a member of The Manning Group where veterans who served aboard the USS Manning during WW II in the South Pacific would meet yearly around the country for a reunion.
Cal was also member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Salem where he had served as a Deacon and sang in the choir. Cal was in charge of the Salem Food Pantry for 18 years until 2006 and he had received the DAR Citizenship Award. He enjoyed walking, gardening, dancing and was a member of the community chorale. Cal loved spending time with his grandchildren and enjoyed traveling. He and his wife sponsored a child from India and had traveled there to meet the child they sponsored through Bibles for the World.
Cal is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mildred Bryer Chapman whom he married January 12, 1947; his children, Valerie Roche of Salem, Beverly Churchill of Lebanon, TN, Marcia Chapman-Bell and her husband Philip of Northampton, MA and Lorianne Keays and her companion Ronald Cowit of Salem; a son-in-law, Gerald Keays of Greenwich. He is also survived by his six grandchildren who knew him "Boppa", Nicole Keays, Cory Keays, Michael Roche, Corey Moffitt, Mandy Moffitt & Wesley Moffitt as well as nine great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by a brother, Rodney Chapman
Friends are invited to call on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 from 4-6 pm at the McClellan-Gariepy Funeral Home, 19 East Broadway, Salem. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, September 29, 2011 at the First United Presbyterian Church of Salem, 13 West Broadway, Salem. A reception for family and friends will be held in the MacKenzie Chapel of the church following the service.
Interment with military honors will be Friday at 12:30 pm at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.
