MATTAWAMKEAG and EAST MILLINOCKET --
Herbert Larrabee Osgood, 93, a resident of Mountain Heights Health Care Facility in Patten, died March 18, 1993, at a Millinocket hospital.

He was born in Kingman May 17, 1899, the son of Henry P. and Theo (Larrabee) Osgood. Herbert had a long and interesting life with many occupations. In his early years, he and friends sought work in wheat fields across the Canadian provinces and then worked passage on merchant shipping lines to the Orient. He later served as postmaster in Mattawamkeag, where he and his wife, the late Pearle (Chambers) Osgood, owned and operated Half Way Camps for many years. During that same time, he was employed by the Canadian Pacific Railroad, Brownville Jct., as a fireman and an engineer, and was a Maine guide at Moosehead Lake, Greenville.

After his retirement, he served as an engineer of the Green Mountain R.R. and the Steam Town, USA R.R., both in the North Walpole, N.H. -- Bellows Falls, Vt. area. In their retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Osgood enjoyed traveling; managing motels in Florida; spending summers at North Twin Lake; working summers at Norris Kidney Pond Camps; and lastly working for Webber as caretakers at Rainbow Lake Camps.

He is survived by two daughters, Sandra Porter of East Millinocket and Donna Hennager of Bellevue, Wash.; a son, Kenneth Taylor of Mattawamkeag; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; several cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a granddaughter, Stephanie Porter; a grandson, Kevin Taylor; and a brother, Eben Osgood.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Friday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the Clay, Stevens & Clay Funeral Home, Lincoln. Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with the Rev. Jerry Conover officiating. Spring burial will be in Mattawamkeag Cemetery. Friends who wish may donate to either the Maine Heart Fund or the Katahdin Support Group. Donations may be left or sent to the funeral home, 3 Lee St., Lincoln 04457.
