Robert Reid Dies, Manufacturer, 71

BEVERLY, Oct. 30 -- Robert Reid, 71, co-founder of Reid Brothers, machine tool makers and one of the largest manufacturers of surface grinders in the world, died today at his home, 22 Appleton Avenue, after a long illness.

Born in Scotland, he came to Beverly as a young man, and with his brother, Andrew F., organized the company 44 years ago. The first plant was on Park Street and 14 years ago the brothers built another plant on Elliott Street, which has been doubled in size in the last two years.

He was a member of the Liberty Lodge of Masons and was a deacon of the Washington Street Congregational Church. He leaves two sons, John U. of Beverly and Sgt. Robert F., USA and three brothers, Thomas J. of Almonte, Ont., Alexander of Arontrior, Ont. and Andrew F. of Beverly.

Funeral services will be held from the Washington Street Congregational Church Tuesday at 2 p.m.
