Joe Britton
FORT WORTH - Joe Britton, 64, a TCU professor, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006, in Dallas.
Celebration of life: 1 p.m. Monday in Robert Carr Chapel, TCU, 2855 S. University, Fort Worth.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Bone Marrow Transplant Program, in care of Dr. Ed Agura, 3409 Worth St., Suite 600, Dallas 75246.
Joe was born Oct. 14, 1942, in Fort Worth. He was a lifelong member of his Fort Worth community. Joe attended TCU, George Washington University and Texas A&M. He married Rebecca "Becky" Brooks Britton on Dec. 28, 1963, in Cherry Hill, N.J.
From a young age, Joe loved science and accomplished his first dream by attaining his Ph.D. in biology. He began his career as an assistant director of exhibits at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. In 1971, Joe and his family moved from McLean, Va., to Fort Worth to begin his long career as a distinguished professor of biology at Texas Christian University.
Two of his many accomplishments were co-authoring "Shore Ecology of the Gulf of Mexico" and "Coastal Ecology of Azores," but his greatest was simply being "Dr. B" with a passion for teaching, and the inspiration for many who went on to become doctors and scientists in our Fort Worth community and throughout the world.
Joe loved his family, his students and TCU. In addition to his teaching and research, he had a passion for music, photography and woodworking. He was truly blessed to be able to share his love of science with his family, who often accompanied him to locations such as Hong Kong, the Azores, Honduras and the Cayman Islands, to pursue his career. Joe passed along a passion for travel, photography, music and science to his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph C. Britton.
Survivors: Loving wife of 42 years, Becky Britton; sons, Mark Joseph Britton and David Keith Britton; daughter, Janet Kay Smith; mother, Gene Britton; and grandchildren, Rachael Britton, Sam Britton, Sarah Britton, Britainy Smith, Reagan Smith, Jakob Britton and Elise Britton.
