Milton's G, Newell Hurd, 88, known for civic charity work
G. Newell Hurd, 88, long active in civic charitable affairs in Milton, died yesterday at his home after a long illness.
A lifelong resident of Milton, he was a town meeting member and a member of the town's warrant committee. He also was chairman of the Milton Visiting Nurse and Social Service League, a trustee of Milton Academy and of Milton Cemetery, and a former member of the vestry and clerk of St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Milton.
During World War II, Hurd was chairman of the Milton Red Cross and chief air raid warden.
A graduate of Milton Academy and Harvard College, Class of 1913, he was an ardent sportsman. He fished in the waters off his summer home in Wareham and Cuttyhunk until a few months before his death.
He leaves a son, George N., Jr. of Milton; two daughters, Alice H. Moulton of Concord and Sylvia H. McDonald of Littleton, Colo.
Services will be private.
