DR. CHARLES TALBOT PORTER, 85

Dr. Charles Talbot Porter, 85, died Sept. 9, 2000, at Cove's Edge.

He was born in New Haven, Conn., a son of Charles T. Porter and Anna Newton. He attended Episcopal Academy in Philadelphia, received a B.E. degree from Yale University, and studied at Harvard Medical School from 1937 to 1942.

He married Elizabeth Ham in 1940. She died of leukemia in 1948.

He had a brief career in engineering with the Dupont Co.

Dr. Porter opened his first office in Pepperell, Mass., where he stayed for 40 years. He took care of two nursing homes, was company doctor for Bemis bag company, St. Regis Paper Mill and was school doctor for area grammar and high schools.

He served on Pepperell's board of health for many years, worked in affiliation with St. Joseph's Hospital and Memorial Hospital in Nashua, N.H., the Ayer Hospital in Ayer, Mass., and later the Nashoba Hospital in Groton, Mass., where he was chief of staff.

He married Barbara Cooney in 1949. She died in March.

From 1953 to 1955, he served in the Army at San Antonio. He transferred to the Navy and was attached to the Marine Corps, serving at China Lake, Calif., and at Camp Pendleton, before serving in the Korean War.

He played chess, tennis, and collected antique watches and clocks. His other interests included classical music, opera, bridge and hiking in the mountains.

In 1984, Dr. Porter retired to his summer home in South Bristol, and his winter home in Damariscotta.

He had lived in the Damariscotta area for the last 13 years, and had vacationed here and in Waldoboro with his family for 50 years.

The Skidompha Public Library project, initiated through a gift presented by Barbara Cooney Porter three years ago, was largely made possible by Dr. Porter's collaboration.

Surviving are two daughters, Phoebe Ann Porter of Conway, Mass., and Gretel Porter of Freeport; two sons, Charles Talbot of Puerto Williams, Chile, and Barnaby Porter of South Bristol; two brothers, John Porter of Guilford, Conn., and Stephen Porter of N.Y.; three grandsons; and a great granddaughter.

A private family memorial service will be held on the bank of the Damariscotta River. Arrangements are by Strong Funeral Home.
