TINA BUDGE

SPRINGFIELD -
Tina Budge, 81, died unexpectedly March 27, 2006, in Springfield. She was born April 23, 1924, in Kingman, the daughter of Winfield and Vida (McAlpine) Scott.

Tina grew up in Kingman, Surry and Springfield, living most of her life in Springfield. Tina had a gift with people; her friendly nature made her many friends in many settings. When the conversation turned to her grandchildren, she was especially proud.

She was a devoted member of the Springfield Congregational Church, UCC and a member of its Ladies Circle and the church choir. Special friendships from this affiliation include Anna Daniels, Linda Doane, Florence Preble, Priscilla Schumm and Lucy Hanscom, as well as choir members Helena Stevens, Eleanor Smith, Tracey Nute, Ralph Stratton, Ralph Clark and Ginny Deaner.

Her many far flung correspondences meant that the art of well-written and heartfelt letter was alive and well in Tina. She kept in touch with friends across the country, including many young graduates of Lee Academy with whom she had a special loyalty. With her love Kent and good friend Norm, Tina was a loyal fan and follower of young athletes. Following the athletic adventures of her granddaughter and friends, she became "Grammie" to the young members of the Lee/Winn Hornets basketball team. She, Ken and Norm were also fans, for nearly three decades, of the athletes of Lee Academy. Tina stayed in touch with these young people, even on into college and into their young lives. Life was always good if there was a game to watch, young people to cheer on and a restaurant to enjoy. She loved to meet and talk to people and she knew waitresses in restaurants across Maine.

Tina sang beautifully and many in the community listened each Easter as she sang "The Holy City" for Sunday services. Beyond this and her other lovely solos and duets, she was the heart and soul of the Springfield church choir. Tina was also a crafter and a skilled poet, whose poetic biography of friends and family were always fun, funny and often touching. In her youth, she was a skilled marksman, and she loved to hunt and fish and trek the outdoors with her family. The Springfield Congregational Church Thrift Shop was her brainchild and with good friends, Anna Daniels and Lucy Hanscom, she made it a reality. For 16 years, Tina was also the historian of the Springfield Fair. A superb cook, the laughter and discussion of family meals around her kitchen table will be sorely missed.

Tina was devoted to her family and she is survived by her husband, Kenneth; daughter and son-in-law Kendra and Kevin Ritchie; grandson, Aaron Knowles and his wife, Theresa; granddaughter Aarika Ritchie; "adopted" grandson Jeffrey Wright; great grandchildren, Matthew, Aiden and Elijah Knowles; a sister and brother-in-law, Gladys and Rod Libby; and very special "family member" Norman Ham. She was predeceased by her brothers, Arnold and Don; and sisters Ethel and Edna. She is survived by a special sister-in-law, Hildred Scott. She was especially fond of two nieces, Jackie Fox and Inez McLaughlin.

Visiting hours are 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 29. The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, March 30. Both visiting hours and funeral will be held at the Springfield Congregational Church, Route 6 in Springfield. Although Tina loved flowers, her generous spirit would want friends to donate in her memory to either the Springfield Congregational Church, to assist with purchase of a new piano, or to the Lee Academy scholarship being established in her name. Arrangements with Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Rd., Lincoln.
