LYMAN E. ALBERT
MATTAWAMKEAG \endash Lyman E. Albert, 72, devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, went to heaven April 18, 2005. He was born May 27, 1932, to Louis and Margaret (Shannon) Albert of Winn.
He served in the U.S. Army towards the end of the Korean War. When he enlisted at the age of 17 (he lied about his age), he had never been out of the small town area of Winn, never been on a train, but the commanding officer put him in charge of six other guys who were all traveling down to Fort Dix from Bangor. He served proudly in Guam and the Mariana Straits during his tour of duty and came back to marry the love of his life, his soul mate, Barbara Quimby in 1954. He met Barbara at the age of 15 while rollerskating at Lowell's Roller Rink in Lincoln.
Lyman was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Winn all of his life serving as a eucharistic minister and other offices of the church in later years following his return to the church after participating in Cursillo in 1977. He was a member of the Avon D. Flanders, VFW Post No. 1438 in Lincoln. Lyman had worked his way up to tower foreman at Great Northern Paper Company starting as a paper maker 50 years ago. He served on the MSAD No. 67 Board of Directors from its inception in 1968, serving as chairman for many years. When he had to leave the board, for medical reasons, after serving for more than 20 years, he was made an honorary life time member of the Board of Directors, for which he was very proud of the recognition and the plaque. The children of the communities of MSAD No. 67 (as were all children he came in contact with) were very important to him and he always made decisions in their very best interest. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Mattawamkeag Area Community Service Recognition Committee in 1989 for his many years of service which included serving as the president of the Recreation Dept.; he and Barbara were also members of the Mattawamkeag Roadrunners.
For his family, camp life was an important part of his life. First, back in the 1960s, when he and Barbara bought their first camp on the Big Narrows and every summer was spent there until 1978. In 1982, a new camp was built on Holiday Lane on Madagascal Pond in Burlington. There, many happy memories were made for Lyman, Barbara, their children and grandchildren. He was a great fan of all sports and was a perennial fixture at all of his children and grandchildren's school activities which included everything from Christmas programs and graduations to football, field hockey, basketball, baseball, softball, cheering competitions and soccer games. He also was most appreciative that he was able to witness Red Sox Nation and their World Championship this past year after being a lifelong fan.
He was the consummate grand-father and loved each and every one of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly. The valuable lessons he taught them through his example will last them in good stead the rest of their lives.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Barbara (Quimby) L. Albert; their six children and their spouses, Regina and Dean Libbey of Mattawamkeag, Lyman Jr. and Shari Albert of Lincoln, Rick and Sherryl Albert of Virginia, Brian and Lisa Albert of Springfield, Nadina and William Fenn of Stetson, Rebecca and Delmont Hanscom of Mattawamkeag; 16 grandchildren, Luke, Aimee, Tyler, Julie, Danielle, Tori, Daniel, Nicholas, Katrina, Sunny, Jessica, William, Dustin, Dylan, Brianna and Brooke; and eight great-grand-children, Dominic, Cameron, Parker, Mason, Kayla, McKenna, Gabrielle and Emma.
Lyman was born on the family farm in Winn into a family of 15 children, seven of whom predeceased him. He is survived by sisters, Myrtle Plourde of West Enfield, Ruth Leavitt of Camden, Beulah Hargrove of Bristol, Conn.; brothers, Clarence Albert of Wallingford, Conn., Alvin Albert of Springfield, Mass., Frank Albert of Rockland, and John Albert of Winn.
Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, at the Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, at Sacred Heart Church in Winn, with Father Cyr officiating. Interment will be in the Mattawamkeag Cemetery.
