SUDDEN DEATH OF DR. E.W. RUSSELL

Prominent Lewiston Physician Succumbs After Short Illness at Pine St. Home

Death Due To Cerebral Hemorrhage -- Was Graduate of the University of Vermont

Dr. Ernest Wesley Russell died suddenly at his home, 98 Pine street at 11:20 o'clock last evening. Death was due to cerebral hemorrhage. Dr. Russell had been in poor health for several years but his last sickness was of but two or three days' duration. He was widely known among the members of the medical profession in Maine and considered one of the leading physicians in this part of the state.

Dr. Russell as a native of Temple, where he was born 56 years ago, the son of Ephraim and Elvira Tuck Russell. His boyhood was spent at Wilton and his early education obtained at Wilton Academy and at the Maine Wesleyan Seminary, Kents Hill. He entered the College of Medicine of the University of Vermont -- and was graduated in the class of 1879.

He came to Minot directly after his graduation, and after practicing there for six years, came to Lewiston, where he established a large practice. Dr. Russell frequently said that he was too busy a man to occupy a pubic office. As the years passed, his increasing practice demanded more and more of his time.

He was a member of various member organizations in the county and state and was a member of the staff at St. Marie's General Hospital.

He was a member of the Androscoggin Lodge I.O.O.F. of Auburn; of Tyrian Lodge, No. 73, , F. & A.M. of Mechanic Falls; Dunlap Council No. 8, R. and S.M., Lewiston; of Lewiston Commandery and Kora Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. He was a 32nd degree Mason.

Dr. Russell married Minnie M. Blanchard of Lewiston and her death occurred twenty-four years ago. Three years later he married Carolyn Sumner of Leeds, who survives him.

He is survived by his step-father, Augusta Chandler of Wilson; by one daughter of his first marriage, Mrs. Elizabeth Russell Foster of Portland, Oregon; by three grandchildren Russell Trufant Foster, LeBarron Russell Foster and Faith Foster, all of Portland, Oregon; by two sisters, Mrs. Curtis L. Sopher of Wakefield, Mass. and Mrs. L.H. Dascombe of Skowhegan, and by his nephew, Dr. Blinn L. Russell of Lewiston.
