FERNALD K. LINSCOTT

SPRINGFIELD --
Fernald K. Linscott, 76, passed away Tuesday, January 5, 2010 with his devoted family by his side. Fernald was born February 26, 1933 in Springfield, the son of Earle (Brock) and Ava Linscott.

Fernald was born and raised in Springfield, having lived in the same home that his family built over 200 years ago. He was a 1951 graduate of Lee Academy. He entered the U.S. Army, serving in Korea from 1953-55 as a member of the 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagles" and 538th Combat Engineers "Army Rangers." Following his military service, he worked as a heavy equipment operator. He continued this passion for more than 60 years with 28 of those years working as Springfield's postmaster. His enthusiasm for perfectionism and honest business practices led to the development of his own excavation business. Eventually, he partnered with his son, Tom- a corporation that Tom continues today.

Fernald's desire to make a difference in people's lives was evident in his past interests and activities including Boy Scouts Leader, Pee Wee Basketball and Little League organizer and coach in Springfield; Lee Academy baseball coach; M.S.A.D. #30 Board of Directors; Lee Academy Board of Directors; and Lee Academy Board of Trustees. He devoted countless hours organizing the effort to expand and improve the existing baseball field at Lee Academy and assisted in establishing a softball field. In turn, the baseball field was dedicated in his honor, i.e. Linscott Field.

Fernald's care and dedication to all those fortunate enough to work with or be coached by him, has not gone unrecognized. Evidence of this exists in the numerous visits, phone calls and plaques of appreciation he has received throughout the years.
All who knew Fernald can attest to his strong moral character. He displayed unwavering patriotism and love for his country (no matter which politician was in office or the state of the economy) and enduring military pride. He had a true conception of the term "freedom" for he had fought to preserve it.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, A. Babetta, fondly known as "Babe;" a son, Thomas and Karen Linscott of Springfield, ME; a daughter, Lynne Haynes and Al Bard, Jr. of Summerfield, NC; two grand daughters, Angie and Daniel Albert of Lincoln, ME and Ashley and Nicholas Albert of Burlington, ME; and two great-grand children, Cole Thomas Albert and Rowan Harlow Albert; a sister, Gloria Kulberg of Hermon, ME; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Friends may call 4-6 p.m. Saturday, January 9, at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln, ME. A memorial service will follow at 6 p.m. at the same location. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fernald K. Linscott Scholarship Fund at Lee Academy, 26 Winn Road, Lee, ME. 04455.
