CHARLES R. OSGOOD

HAMPDEN and WINTHROP --
Charles R. Osgood of Hampden and Winthrop passed away Feb. 29, 2000, at Eastern Maine Medical Center.

He was born to Eben and Sadie Osgood (Gillespie) in St. Stephen, N.B., Canada on Sept. 18, 1923. He graduated from Mattawamkeag High School in 1940.

Charlie was a member of the Armed Forces in World War II, having served with the Army in the Pacific theatre with an anti-aircraft unit attached to the Marines. He saw action in three major operations, including Iwo Jima, where he observed Old Glory being raised on Mount Surabachi.

Charlie was honorably discharged on Jan. 1, 1946 and went on to graduate from the University of Maine in 1950, with a degree in mechanical engineering. He worked 16 years for H.E. Sargent, Inc. of Stillwater, serving in various capacities, then 20 years for the Maine Department of Transportation in he Construction Division, retiring in 1984. Before entering the military, Charlie worked as a welder for two years in the shipyard in South Portland. He also taught math and science in 1960-61 at Nokomis High School in Newport, which was one of his more satisfying accomplishments.

Charlie belonged to several organizations; among them, the Maine Association of Retirees, the National Rifle Association, life member Veterans of Foreign Wars, Charter and life member Sportman's Alliance of Maine, Eddington Salmon Club, 35 year member of Temple Lodge of Masons in Winthrop, and a 32nd degree member in Scottish Rite Bodies of the Valleys of Bangor and Portland. Charlie enjoyed hunting and fishing, gardening, his camp on St. George Lake, and playing baseball in his earlier days.

He is survived by Jackie, his wife of 52 years; a daughter, Linda Osgood of Bangor; a son, Charles and his wife, Dianne of Hampden; two granddaughters, Jennifer Robinson and her husband, Jeff of Dover Foxcroft, and Jessica Osgood of Hampden; a great granddaughter, Alexus of Dover Foxcroft; a sister, Ellie Martin and her husband Arlie of Orland and Punta Gorda, Fla.; a brother, Eben and his wife, Janice of Orono; several nieces and nephews. He was previously deceased by a sister, Sadie.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday March 4, 2000 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor with the Rev. Dr. Rex H. Garrett, Jr., Director of Chaplaincy Services, EMMC, officiating. Interment will be in Maine Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Brookings-Smith Family Center, 163 Center St., Bangor, after the service. Gifts in his memory may be sent to the Arthritis Foundation Maine Chapter, Inc., 930 Brighton Avenue, Portland, Maine 04102.
