Samuel H. Birt, 56, Ex-City Councilman, Suicide by Hanging
Samuel H. Birt, 56, of 70 Porpoise Way, a former city councilman and member of the board of registrars, took his own life Saturday night by hanging himself from a bedroom light fixture with a necktie.
Dr. William D. Wilder of Derry, Rockingham County medical referee, reported a verdict of suicide.
Members of Mr. Birt's family said he was despondent over the death of a son during World War II and the death of a granddaughter in Germany several years ago.

When the ship was taken over by the government in 1944 for war use, he was among the crew who left here and traveled to Pearl Harbor aboard the vessel.
He returned to Portsmouth in 1945 and was elected to the city council for two years. He also served on the board of registrars. Mr. Birt was employed at the State Liquor commission store on Market street at the time of his death.
Mr. Birt enlisted in the 23rd infantry of the Maine national guard in April 18, 1918, and was a member of Division 2, Ancient Order of Hibernians.
