Body of Missing Woman Discovered

MAXFIELD -
The body of a 31 year old Howland woman who had been missing for a week was discovered Tuesday by a man searching out locations to lay beaver traps for the upcoming season.

Detective Sgt. Michael Harrington of the Penobscot County Sheriff's Department said Lisa Curtis' car was spotted in a wooded area off the North Howland Road.

Chief Deputy Carl Andrews said the car was somewhat concealed, and said it appeared that Curtis had been in the car for quite some time.

Curtis left her aunt's Howland home last Thursday and supposedly was en route to pick up her two children, who were staying with their father in Lincoln.

Her family reported her missing after she failed to arrive at her ex-husband's home.

Andrews said it appeared Curtis died of carbon-monoxide poisoning, but said the cause of death would not be confirmed until an autopsy was performed today by the state Medical Examiner's Office.

Curtis' sister, Debbie Dorr, said Curtis had been depressed about a recent breakup with her boyfriend. She said that when Curtis left her aunt's home shortly after 6 a.m. Thursday, she refused to eat breakfast because she was so upset.

Local police and sheriff's deputies had searched extensively for Curtis, and Dorr said she had driven around most of the back roads between Howland and Lincoln looking for her sister.
