FREEPORT CAFE OWNER KNIFED Charles Lindsey Held After Mysterious Attack
Freeport, Ill., July 13 -- Charles Lindsey, 41, 617 West Douglas Street, was being held in the Stephenson County jail here tonight on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon as the aftermath of a mysterious attack on Leo Rowen, 46, who was knifed this afternoon as he sat at a counter in the restaurant he operates at 17 South Galena Ave.
City police who investigated the affray reported Rowen received superficial wounds on the back and left arm before he overpowered his assailant.
Arrested 30 Times
Lindsey, according to police records, has been arrested for 30 different offenses since 1929, the last time being in January when he was sentenced to six months at the Vandalia state prison farm on a charge of assaulting his wife, Mildred. At that time, authorities said, he fired a shot from a .45 caliber automatic at her and threw a knife at her when the bullet missed. He was recently released from the penal farm.
Police said witnesses told them Lindsey walked into the restaurant, where Mrs. Lindsey formerly worked at 3:25 p.m. As he strode up to Rowen, who was seated at a counter drinking coffee, he drew out a pocket knife with a three inch blade and slashed at him. Rowen was cut on the back and hand and Lindsey suffered a cut hand.
Lindsey then is reported to have walked out of the restaurant south to Main Street and west to South Walnut Avenue where police, who had been summoned to the restaurant, apprehended him. A knife identified as the one used on the attack on Rowen was recovered on the ground of a parking lot at Main Street and South Walnut Avenue.
No Motive Established
Rowen declined to comment on the attack other than to state that his injuries were minor, and authorities reported no motive had been established for the assault.
Police Officers Robert Rinderman, Robert Eberle, and Robert Kerlin are investigating the case.
