AUBURN MAN COMMITS SUICIDE; INHALES GAS DISCOVERED BY WIFE
George W. McGuire Dies of Asphyxiation -- Wife Claiming Doctors Refused To Come On Call, Says His Life Could Have Been Saved -- Fireman Use Inhalator To No Avail -- Was Former Motorman
Near death from a suicide attempt when found by his wife in the kitchen of his home, 93 Washington street, Auburn, George Willard McGuire, 45, died of asphyxiation before aid reached him Sunday morning. Auburn fireman called at 7 a.m., worked with an inhalator but could not save his life. Dr. J.E. Cartland, medical examiner, pronounced death a suicide by asphyxiation. Despondency over ill health and unemployment was believed by Mrs. Mona McGuire, his wife, to have been cause of the suicide.
Mrs. McGuire who said her husband was not dead when she found him, was loud in condemning four doctors, who she said, would not come when she called them. She claimed that had she been able to get immediate help her husband's life could have been saved. One doctor, she said, came about an hour after being called.
Firemen Make Try
Lt. Chifelle and Fireman Wright, McDonald and Lowell responded to a call from 93 Washington streeet, but though they worked at length with an inhalator could not save the man's life. Dr. Cartland came in response to their call.
Mr. McGuire was a shoe worker but had not had work recently. His unemployment and ill health were blamed by his wife for his act.
He leaves no children; is survived by his wife, two sisters, Mrs. Emma Bradford of Lewiston and Mrs. Daniel Hammond of Sabattus; three brothers, Earl of Leominster, Mass., Carroll of Auburn and Percy of Lewiston. Mr. McGuire was born in Leeds, son of Daniel and Grace McGuire, and his father also survives.
Though recently a shoe worker, Mr. McGuire had been employed for many years as a motorman on the A and K and later as a fireman for the M.C.R.R., a position he held about eight years.
