GEORGE CANWELL
16 YEAR OLD NORTH MONMOUTH BOY ELECTROCUTED ATOP POLE
WINTHROP -- George Canwell, 16, of North Monmouth, was killed early Sunday morning when he climbed a telephone pole on the Mt. Mizpah Road and came in contact with some live wires. Dr. Leon D. Herring, medical examiner, returned a verdict of accidental death.
Hubert Ridlon and Miss Helen Frost of North Monmouth told State Trooper St. Leger that Canwell had been "fooling" on the way home from a dance, ran ahead of them and climbed the post.
After an attempt to rescue the boy, Ridlon race a mile to his home, where his father notified St. Leger.
Apparently the boy had been sitting on the cross bar of the pole, his hands contacting the wires. His hands and an area four inches above the left knee were burned. Roy Phillips of the Central Maine Power Co. and E.E. York of the L.G. & M. removed the body.
Canwell leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Canwell of North Monmouth; two sisters, Wavelette and Elizabeth; a brother, Norman; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Canwell of North Monmouth and ... [remainder of article not found].
