Edward Wellman, Jr., 45, of Chester, Conn., a Lewiston resident many years, died yesterday at his home after having been in failing health several months.
A graduate of Lewiston High School with the class of 1932 and from Bates College, class of 1936, he was prominent in sports during his school years and in 1935 and 1936 was a member of the All Maine Football team. He coached football and basketball at Wilbraham Academy at Wilbraham, Mass. from 1942 to 1950, when he became associated with the Laidlaw Brothers Brooks in Connecticut. He remained with the company until 1956 when he became associated with the Mainco Trading Co., a school supplies and equipment house he was associated with at the time of his death.
During World War II, he was commissioned a lieutenant in the United States Navy and served in the Pacific Theater.
He was a member of the Saybrook, Conn. Rotary Club, a member of the Connecticut Educational Salesmen's Association and the Middlesex County Board Y.M.C.A. He was a member of the United Church of Chester and had attended the Federated Church, Lewiston.
His father was a former Lewiston alderman who served as a member of the local draft board during World War II.
The son of Edward F. and the late Harriet Dresser Wellman, he was born in Ashville, North Carolina, March 17, 1913, but made his home in Lewiston for many years. In Sept. 1937, he married Madeline McIlroy of Lewiston who survives, as does his son, Edward F. Wellman, III, and his father, who is a patient at a Connecticut nursing home.
DIED -- In Chester, Conn., Oct. 14, 1958, Edward F. Wellman Jr. Funeral services will be held at the Robinson and Wright Funeral Home, Essex, Conn. Thursday at 2 p.m. Services at the Plummer and Merrill Funeral Home Saturday at 2 p.m.
