Alyce Thompson Alexander
Alyce Thompson Alexander, 93, died Wednesday, November 4, 2009, at Knox Center For Long Term Care in Rockland. Born in Prentiss on January 23, 1916, she was the daughter of Arthur R. and Candace (Baldwin) Thompson.
She was a graduate of Brewster Academy in Wolfboro, New Hampshire and Washington State Teachers College in Machias where she received her teaching certificate. While in college, Alyce met her future husband, Herbert W. Alexander from Camden. They were married in 1935 in New Hampshire. Mrs. Alexander taught school in Prentiss and in the midcoast area for several years. Following her husband's discharge from the U.S. Army, they purchased a farm in Simonton's Corner in Rockport which became the Alexander Egg Farm. Since 1947, Mrs. Alexander managed the egg farm for many years collecting as many as 400 dozen eggs, seven days a week. At one time they had 135,000 laying hens and sold eggs at the farm but also to local bakeries, restaurants and stores including the Rockland school lunch program. In her spare time, she served on the Rockport School Board, was a member the Order of the Eastern Star and the Farm Bureau. As a young girl she had been a member of the Rainbow Girls.
Surviving is: daughter Candace Arau of Rockport; grandchildren Alex Arau and wife Lana of Rockport, Cathleen Harris and husband James of Charles City, Virginia; grandchildren Tori Arau and Colby Arau, both of Rockport; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert W. Alexander in 1966; daughter Frances G. Alexander in 1994; brothers and sisters Candace A. Hale, William Thompson, Eleanor Thompson, Phyllis Hamilton, George Thompson and Arthur Thompson, Jr.; and son-in-law Basil D. Arau.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, November 8, at the West Rockport Cemetery with the Rev. David English and the Rev. Ralph Miller co-officiating. Memorial donations may be made to The Basil D. Arau Memorial Scholarship Fund, Camden Hills Regional High School, c/o Angela Carlsen, 24 Keelson Drive, Rockport, ME 04856. Arrangements are with the Long Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 9 Mountain Street in Camden.
