Edwin A. Emerson, Sr.


Edwin Arthur Emerson, Sr., 80, died Tuesday at his home in the Yagger neighborhood of Norway.

He was born at Norway, July 28, 1907, the son of Luther E. and Miranda Colclough Emerson. He married the former Vera A. Merrill on March 1, 1930. He graduated from Norway High School in the class of 1925, lettering in all sports. Hunting, fishing, trapping and sports were his favorite pastimes. In the 1930s, he was first baseman in the Pinetree League. While at the University of Maine at Orono, he became a life member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. In 1928, he graduated from Coyne Electrical School of Chicago with high honors. In 1941, he purchased a dairy farm on Pike Hill in Norway and since 1946 had lived and farmed in Norway. He worked in the local shoe factories for 45 years and became the president of the local shoemakers' union in the early 1960s.

In 1941, he became noble grand of the Norway Lodge, IOOF and during his term of office the mortgage on the Oddfellows' building was burned. He was a past chief patriarch of the Wildey Encampment, a past captain of the Alfred S. Kimball Canton, and he was a member of the ALF Pike Past Grands and Past Chief Patriarch Association. He was instrumental in the formation and installation of the Norway Pine Tree Junior Lodge, IOOF, of Maine, becoming the 106th grand master in 1952. He was a past chancellor commander in the Knights of Pythias, Pennesseewassee Lodge of Norway and was a past master of the Norway Grange. He served in the town school building committee in 1950 and was a memeber of the First Universality Church of Norway.

He is survived by his wife of Norway; two sons, Edwin A., Jr. of Norway, and Robert O. of Bartlett, N.H.; two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Clara) Eckard of Daytona Beach, Fla. and Mary A. Emerson of New Providence, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
