REX LINDSAY VARNUM

Rex Lindsay Varnum, 85, died at his home in Williamsburg, N.M., Nov. 25, 2004. He was born April 26, 1919, in Carrol, the son of Marion Esther Lindsay and Lindsay Varnum.

He attended Lee Academy and was a graduate of Milo High School. Rex and his wife, Beatrice started a dairy farm on the River Road in Sebec in 1943, and continued in that business until their retirement to New Mexico in 1970, where they spent their winter months. Rex was a member of the Maine Milk Commission for 16 years and also served as chairman of that body. He was pleased to be a winner of the New England Pastures Award and recognized as a Maine Outstanding Farmer. He was a selectman of the town of Sebec for many years and always retained a great regard for that place as well as his beloved River Road. Rex and Bea enjoyed their membership in the "Spit 'n Whittle Club" in New Mexico and their many friends there.

Rex was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Helen Beatrice Hill in 1999. He is survived by his wife, Josephine (Guernsey) Varnum of Williamsburg, N.M.; two daughters, Dorna Varnum Zilinsky and her husband, Tom, of Sanford; Diane Varnum Smith of Old Town; three sons, Robert Varnum and his wife, Ruth, of Sebec, Richard Varnum and his wife, Rinda, of Sebec, Ryan Varnum and his wife, Lin, of Hopeland, Calif.; 13 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. Friends are invited to call from 11:30 a.m. until time of funeral service at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft. Burial will be in the family lot in Rural Grove Cemetery.
