Leone G. "Lee" Allen, 72, of Westcott Road, South Portland, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at her residence. She wa born in Prentiss, a daughter of Laurence and Bernice Lindsay Averill.

She attended Prentiss schools, graduated in 1946 as an honor student from Bangor High School, and attended the University of Maine evening school. In 1961, she became the first woman in Maine to receive a chartered property casual underwriter designation. Ms. Allen was the co-owner and treasurer with William Soule of Soule Allen Insurance in South Portland. She began her insurance career in Bangor in 1948, and was employed for 11 years as supervisor of Commercial Casualty Division, Aetna Life and Casualty, returning to the agency business in 1970.

Her professional affiliations include past president, charter member and education chairman of Maine Chapter of CPCU, past president, chairman of safety, Education and Legislation Committees of Insurance Women of Southern Maine, Past Region I Director, National Chairman of Safety, Education, Legislation, STATES, Education Advisory Committee of National Association of Insurance Women, past president and founder of Maine Professional Society, whose purpose was to establish an insurance library, served four years on the General Agents Advisory Board to Maine Insurance Department, MAP Committee and General Lines Agent Examination Advisory Board, instructor of insurance courses and risk management, past director of Professional Insurance Agents of New England, past presidents of PIA of Maine, Inc. of New England Alliance of Insurance Agents Association, member and past education chairman of Independent Insurance Agents of Maine, past director of Cumberland County Board of Independent Insurance Agents, member of Maine Insurance Agents Council, a designation as a "Certified Professional Insurance Woman", director and PIA Maine liasion, Maine Insurance Agents Association, and state and national director of the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents.

Her civic activities included past chairman of the Maine Highway Safety Committee for 14 years and advisory board to Secretary of State, charter member and past officer of Maine Safety Council, past I Directory, National Association of Women Highway Safety Leaders, defensive driving instructor and instructor trainer, National Safety Leaders, lecturer on safety, alcohol, countermeasures, crime in the streets, defensive driving, insurance and careers, past director and secretary, Maine Institution for the Blind.

She was past director and secretary, Maine Institution for the Blind; president of the Fairways Condominium Owners Association; past moderator, church school teacher, finance committee chairman and board of trustees, Woodfords Congregational Church; past secretary Altrusa Club of Portland, past regional chairman, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation; past member of the United Community Fund, Social Planning Committee and Legislative Committee; member, Maine Educational Council; past director and chairman of the Economic Development Committee South Portland Chamber of Commerce; member of Knightville Redesign Committee, City of So. Portland; member of COOP Advisory Committee, So. Portland High School; served as chairman and secretary of So. Portland Civil Service Commission; member and photographer for the City of So. Portland Gift Catalog; producer of Chamber of Commerce television program "Tax Impact Analysis", and producer of Chamber of Commerce video "So. Portland Maine has it all"; served three years as member and president of So. Portland Planning Board; a Governor's appointee to "Task Force to Study the Safe Mobility of Maine's Aging Population" and "Task Force to Examine the Desirability of a Model Municipal Building Code"; volunteer for Maine's Special Olympics; and served as a member on the City of So. Portland's Knightville/Millcreek Design Advisory Committee, which was appointed by the mayor.

Mrs. Allen also received enumerous awards including, "Insurance Woman of the Year" in 1967, Governor's Highway Safety Award in 1967 for Defensive Driving Activities, Maine Truck Owners Safety Award in 1970 for "Outstanding service in the Field of Highway Safety", "New England Insurance Agent of the Year" in 1978 for the contribution to the insurance industry and the community, "Professional Insurance Agents of Maine 1993 Agent of the Year", which was for outstanding leadership and dedication to the insurance industry and the independent agency community. This year the Maine Chapter of CPCU 2001 Award was renamed in her honor, The Lee Allen Presidents Award for Excellence.

Mrs. Allen is survived by a sister, Beverly Smart of Kennebunk; a brother, Laurence Averill of West Palm Beach, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and her long-time business associate of 30 years, William P. Soule of South Portland.

Visiting hours will be held 5-8 pm at Conroy-Tully So. Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, So. Portland. A celebration of life will be held 1PM Tuesday at the Woodfords Congregational Church. Visitation will be held 10-11 am Wednesday at the Clay Funeral Home, 3 Lee St. Lincoln, ME. Funeral service will follow at 11 am at Clay Funeral Home.
