HEAD ON COLLISION CLAIMS ORLAND WOMAN

BUCKSPORT -- A head-on collision in Bucksport Monday afternoon killed an Orland woman and sent four other persons to the hospital.

According to Officer Jay Durost of the Bucksport Police Department, Evelyn Gray, 80, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident on Route 15 about 3 miles north of town.

Durost said that according to the report by investigating officer Sgt. Keith Bishop, Gray was traveling north on Route 15 when her vehicle crossed into the left hand and struck an oncoming vehicle driven by Karen Wade, 36, of Bucksport. The cause of the accident was under investigation, Durost said.

Gray's great-grandchildren, Amanda Sargent, 3, and Sean Sargent, 5, both of Orland, were passengers in the Gray vehicle. Amanda received a possible fracture to the left arm and right hand and fingers. She was transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor, where she was treated then released.

Sean received a severe laceration of the forehead and was tranported to EMMC where he was scheduled to be admitted.

Wade received a possible fractured nose and an injury to her left leg in the accident. Her daughter, Lisa, 11, received minor head injuries. Both were transported to the Bucksport Regional Health Center.

Both Gray's vehicle, a 1979 Ford, and the Wade vehicle, a 1983 Ford van, were totaled in the accident, according to police.

In addition to Sgt. Bishop, officers investigating the accident were Chief Douglas Gray and Officers Byron Vinton and Fred Mills.

ORLAND -- Evelyn B. Gray, 80, died Aug. 19, 1985, in Bucksport. She was born in Surry, March 11, 1905, the daughter of David A. and Georgia L. (Gray) Gray. She was a member of the Castine Grange for more than 50 years. She was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary and did many years of volunteer work at Togus. She is survived by two sons, Ralston and Weldon "Dick", both of Orland; two daughters, Elaine Dobbins of Stockton Springs and Margueritte Carey of Orland; two sisters, Isabelle (Harris) Burroughs of Verona and Josephine Chopin of Massachusetts; nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at South Orland Church of God with the Rev. Louis Cushman officiating. Friends may call at the church 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. Interment will be in the family cemetery, Orland. Donations may be made in her memory to the South Orland Church of God. Arrangements by Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, Bucksport.
