John R. Hicks

GARDINER --
John R. Hicks, 60, of Gardiner, died at his home after a long illness.

He was born in North Livermore April 12, 1934, son of Robert M. and Verna (Leadbetter) Hicks.

He was educated at the University of Maine where he received his B.S. degree in Civil Engineering. He was employed by the Maine Department of Transportation as a resident engineer on bridge construction projects for a few years and was more recently the Department's Utility and Railroad Engineer, coordinating utility relocation with highway and bridge construction projects.

He was a retired Lt. Colonel with the U.S. Army Reserves. He was for several years a director of M.S.A.D. 11 and served for a time as chairman. Mr. Hicks was a member of the Highland Avenue United Methodist Church where he was an Administrative Council member and Chairman of the Trustees, and a member of Herman Lodge of Masons, AF & AM. He sang for many years in the church choir and in many local musical productions. He was fond of hiking, camping and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Beatrice Stevens Hicks of Gardiner; two daughters, Rebecca Hicks and Donna Lufkin, both of Gardiner; two sons, Robert and Michael Hicks, both of Gardiner; a brother, Steven Hicks of Green; several grandchildren.

Died in Gardiner, John R. Hicks. Friends and relatives may visit at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner, Wednesday 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. A memorial service will be held at the Highland Avenue United Methodist Church 1 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Elizabeth C. Bachelder officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday at family lot in Riverside Ext. Cemetery, S. Paris. Contributions may be made to Kidney Foundation of Maine, PO Box 1134, Portland, Maine 04104, or Highland Avenue United Methodist Church, c/o Rev. Elizabeth Bachelder, Highland Avenue, Gardiner.
