FAITH RAMONA AUSTIN HOLLAND

GUILFORD \endash Faith Ramona Austin Holland, 81, wife of the late H. Vernon Holland, passed away unexpectedly Jan. 30, 2008. She died peacefully in her sleep at the home of her son, Matt, in Guilford. Faith was born Aug. 21, 1926, in Dover-Foxcroft, the daughter of Jasper and Violet Austin.

She graduated from Foxcroft Academy in 1945. Faith attended Farmington State Teacher's College and graduated from the University of Maine at Orono, with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. She taught school for 23 years, primarily at Abbot Village School. Faith was also a telephone operator in the Dover-Foxcroft office of Bell Telephone and Telegraph Co., and she worked for many years with her husband on their dairy farm in Guilford.

After she retired, Faith fulfilled one of her lifelong dreams, to go sightseeing in Alaska. In the summer of 1991, she spent nearly two weeks touring Denali National Park and along the Alaska coastline. Faith cherished the memory of this experience for the rest of her life. Faith loved to sing and play the organ. She attended Dover-Foxcroft United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir. She was also part of the Aging Polka Dots musical group, who performed in various nursing homes throughout central Maine. Her love of music remained with her to the end.

Faith is survived by two sons, Matt Holland of Guilford and Mark Holland of Nashua, N.H. She has four grandchildren, Robert, Matthew and Victoria Holland, the children of Mark and Elizabeth Holland, and Matt's daughter, Shining Ohlson of Sangerville; as well as one great-granddaughter, Faith Ohlson. Faith also leaves behind two sisters, Hope Lacourciere of Dover-Foxcroft and Jane Bucknam of Old Town.

Faith was predeceased by her mother and father, Violet and Jasper Austin; three brothers, Dwane, Wesley and Jerry Austin; her sister, Bertha Austin Gallant; her husband, Vernon Holland; her best friend and college roommate, Clara Kinsman Moore; and her good friends and neighbors, Tom and Mert Barkley.

Faith will be remembered by all who knew her as a thoughtful, loving and selfless person, who always put the needs of others before her own. She will be greatly missed by her family, all of her students and her many friends. GUILFORD \endash A graveside funeral service for Faith R. (Austin) Holland, wife of the late H. Vernon Holland, who died Jan. 30, 2008, will be conducted 3 p.m. Friday, June 13, at Lee Cemetery, Dover-Foxcroft, with the Rev. Neil Gastonguay officiating. Faith married Harold Vernon Holland, son of Harold Vernon Holland and Ivona Mae Bryer, 8 November 1947 in Maine.⁴²⁶ (Harold Vernon Holland was born 2 March 1921 in Milo, Piscataquis County, Maine ⁸¹²⁴ and died 5 March 1987 in Dover Foxcroft, Piscataquis County, Maine ⁸¹²⁵.)
